Preventing breast cancer
Some weeks ago, I had a great time with married and single women in my church where I delivered a lecture on BREAST CANCER(BC).
Here is a brief write up you should know about BCππ»
Breast cancer is real and can be prevented.
There are several causes/risk factors of BC;
ππ» Gender: Mostly Female (Men have too but rare).
ππ» Age: 50 and above.
ππ» Family history of BC in mother or sister.
ππ» Early Menarchy (the onset of menstruation) before age 12 and Late Menopause (the end of menstruation) over age 50.
ππ» Alcohol use.
ππ» Childbirth at late 30s.
ππ» Obesity: Obesed women produce more oestrogen and this predisposes them to BC.
ππ» Frequent exposure to radiation @less than 40years.
ππ» Diet: Consumption of food containing carcinogens(a substance/agent that can cause cancer) these are found in processed foods, refined sugar,carbonated drinks etc.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS ARE;
✔ Small, hard, painless lump in the breast.
✔ Change in size and shape of breast.(Be familiar with your breast shape and size.)
✔ Nipple discharge (Blood stained discharge.)
✔ Pain in the breast.
✔ Dimpling/Pulling/Retraction of the nipple or on the breast.
✔ Persistent skin rash near the nipple.
✔ Unusual lump on the underarm or above the collarbone.Etc
If you notice any of these, don't hesitate to visit the hospital for proper check up.
You can detect any of these through SELF BREAST EXAMINATION(Done by you) and CLINICAL BREAST EXAMINATION (By a trained health professional) Where further investigations like Ultrasound Scan, Mammography(Detects breast tumours 2years before they are palpable) can be ordered by your physician.
PREVENTION OF BC:
✍πΌ Eat healthy diet(fruits, vegetables etc).
✍πΌ Avoid becoming overweight.(We'll discuss body mass index later). Avoid Sedentary lifestyle, be physically active and engage in physical exercises @least 30mins daily.
✍πΌ No AlcoholππΌ Avoid smoking.
✍πΌ Mothers should breastfeed their babies for at least 1years, it doesn't only help your baby, it helps you tooπ.
✍πΌ Monthly Self breast examination.
